Christmas Open Mic
Christmas Open Mic I was delighted to be part of this year’s Christmas Open Mic hosted by Pauline Clooney. I’d never been at this type of event before and found it really interesting and great fun too. Pauline had invited along both current and past members of her creative writing groups. Basically, we each took turns at reading pieces of our own writing. There was a nice mixture of poetry, short stories, and novel extracts. I have to admit that I was a bit nervous when my turn came around, but I guess everyone felt the same. On the night, I decided to read a few poems: Prism Spluttering Silence Dance…

Christmas Home Time
Christmas Home Time Today I saw my first Reindeer Car, so I know that Christmas has well and truly arrived! I’m not really a fan of all the commercial hype. It seems to suggest that we can’t have a happy Christmas unless we spend, spend, spend. The list is endless…Decorations, kitchen equipment, furniture, clothes, gifts and enough food to feed a small village for a week. I’m not a Grinch, though, because I still do all the Christmas stuff and there are certain things about it that I love. One of the best parts is sharing time with the people I love, so I’m thrilled that both my son and…

Balance
Balance Photograph: Balance This is the photograph “Balance” that won the judges’ award at the Happy Snappers camera club exhibition. As I said before, I was absolutely delighted to receive this award. We all submit our pictures, but we do it not thinking about winning anything, it’s just nice to participate. Sometimes I think that my images are a bit too left of centre to do well in competitions, I tend to break rules rather than follow them. The creative spirit, I guess…Or maybe just being awkward!? Anyway, it was a lovely surprise to see this picture win the judges’ approval. Background When I first spotted this picture in my…

Spluttering Silence
Spluttering Silence That night was a night like no other. A night of dark and brooding skies, Blue-tinged clouds and Shooting stars which bore the scars Of a million flickering miles. Slowly, silently, all was dimmed and A moon which hung disconsolate, Its light no longer needed and Useless as a burst balloon, Simply faded and receded. The stillness matched the darkness In intensity and pain, Until from deep within the earth, From its very core, hot like fire, A sound began to resonate, A rumbling explosion that roared and rushed to the surface, Spilling scalding red rivers And Sulphur fumed ashes Upon a once verdant landscape. Earth’s death throes,…

Old Files, Lucky Finds
Old Files, Lucky Finds One of my December targets was to start backing up the photographs from my PC onto an external hard drive. The first step was obviously to find a hard drive! That meant rooting through several “jumble boxes”…You know the type that is full of old leads and chargers and you have no idea what belongs to what. While searching through one of the boxes, I came across a hard drive that I hadn’t seen since I moved house a few years ago. In fact, I didn’t even remember having it, so was curious about what might be on it. In amongst the house-moving documents, I found several…

Ten December Targets
Ten December Targets I can’t believe that Christmas is almost upon us, it seems only like yesterday that I started this Cavewoman blog back in September. It has certainly taken a slightly different course than I envisaged in the beginning…I never thought I’d get around to doing so much creative writing. Still, there are several areas that need more work. I had a look back at my November Review and came up with the following ten December targets: My Ten December Targets Camera Work: Focus on a Christmas theme, indoor or outdoor is fine. Behind the Image: Write a few “Behind the Image” posts. Include camera data as appropriate. Photo…

November Review Cavewoman Blog
November Review Setting monthly targets has turned out to be one of my better ideas. It has helped me stay more organised and focused than usual and there is a certain satisfaction in achieving the targets. So how did I get on with my ten November targets? Well, I had mixed success, really. I seemed to achieve better in overall goals, rather than specifics, but that’s okay too. I think I was over-ambitious in some areas, while not challenging myself enough in others. Here is my November Review, see what you think. Organization My November review tells me that this area still needs a lot of work, but at least…

Ten Favourite Inspirational Quotes
Inspirational Quotes Coming across a great quote can be very therapeutic, at least that’s been my experience. Sometimes it’s all I need to jolt me out of a creative slump or help me put things into perspective. Everyone probably has their own favourite inspirational quotes, words they reach for when the going gets tough. The following is a list of my ten favourite inspirational quotes. They range from the whacky to the deeply philosophical and probably reflect the wanderings of my mind! I hope that you enjoy reading them and perhaps come across an interesting one that you haven’t read before. Ten Favourite Inspirational Quotes “The two most important days in…

Adonis
Adonis “Hi, do you mind if I join you?” Sandy jerked her head up from the book and stared at this modern-day Adonis. In fact, he was way better than that, she thought. Besides having perfectly balanced features, the man had that rugged, unspoiled appearance that only the coolest guys could muster. And, best of all, he was still a living, breathing member of humanity. Wow! This could be my lucky day. Sandy smiled and nodded her head, hoping she looked more nonchalant than she felt. “Yes, no problem. It’s busy here today, isn’t it?” Adonis put his tray down on the benchtop and squeezed in beside Sandy. She noticed…

Last Steps
Last Steps The last steps like the first steps, Cautious and faltering, Seeking for guidance and Aiming for home. The light that was carried and Molded and shared Is dimming and fading With each turn of the stairs. The breathing is laboured The heartbeat unsure But the gift is still carried And presented, unpure. The last light like the first light, Blazing and beckoning, Retrieving the flame and The gift that was given. Transparent hands hold it aloft, Was I worthy? Did I shine? Did I do enough? The flicker of life returns to its’ core, Unseeing, unknowing, undead. I wrote this piece in response to the above picture.…
